Refashioning Kimonos

Again, I want to show you a fast and satisfying project. With a Kimono that I already unthread long time ago, I made the Belcarra Blouse from Sewaholic. I still have quite a lot of fabrics and I’ve decided to go for a simple top. I found the model on one of my Japanese sewing books.I found this top quite simple and cute. I didn’t use a pattern for this. When you unthread Kimono, you have 37cm width piece of fabrics. I took two pieces that I sew together. I’ve shortened a little bit the sleeves. I like the V neck of the front and the back.

  1. so beautiful – your blog is really inspirational! I’ve been collecting kimono fabrics for years and have now decided to start sewing with them. Your center seam looks incredibly neat, how do you join the 2 panels in the middle ? do you make a center seam with 1cm seam allowance and then iron down the seam allowance? I know I know.. totally stupid question… I really am a total beginner!

    1. Hi! Thank you!
Indeed, it is a very simple design: you take two panels of the same length. You decide about the opening, then, you sew at 1cm. Iron the seam allowance on the inside. I’ve top stitched around for keeping the seam allowance inside.
Same for the armhole. Happy sewing!
